The dawn of a new year

iso 400, f/22, ss 1/8 sec

Day one. I had this great idea that a sunrise pic would be perfect for the first day of a new year. Well, the idea was better in theory than in practise. 6 am and the sun was just coming up - unfortunately it was cloudy, but I did persist. I have to admit the results were less than impressive - under exposed and just not sharp. I really struggle to get the exposure right for sunrises - the sky is too bright and the foreground too dark. Also I should have bumped up my ISO. Oh well, at least with this challenge I have lots of days to learn. Look out 31/12/07, I'm aiming for the perfect sunrise pic (or maybe sunset would be more appropriate).

I love this picture. It is very cool. It screams the night may have been rough but today is a new day. Can't wait to see more.

I think this capture is beautiful. I agree, it's challenging to get a correct exposure during sunrise/sunset but I LOVE the composition and color on this.

Weather never cooperates. That would make it too easy. I think that the clouds actually add mood. Great job and good effort!

Thank you all for the comments. It really made my day. My husband thinks this shot kinda looks like another planet - I think that's good????

Yeah, at that ss you pretty much need a tripod. But the capture is awesome! Love the clouds, color and composition (although watch out for crooked horizons!).

the sad part is that I was using my tripod :(

Thanks for telling us about this site patti.
I love this shot.
I recently took some shots at the other end of the scale, sunset, and they were real dark too but upon lightening them up the whole effect , the moodiness was lost, and it's the same with your foreground in this shot..the darkness of it really conveys the, what I always think of, as the mysterious stillness of that time of day.

I wish I could soot a sunrise as good as this one. I am too nervous to post any of mine. They are really bad. I really like the mood. It has personality.
